Anyone who has ever experienced lumbago knows the feeling: the pain comes out of nowhere and brings daily life to a standstill within seconds. What exactly causes it – and what can be done about it?
Acute back pain or sudden lower back pain are among the most common reasons for visiting the doctor and for taking sick leave. They often occur unexpectedly. It is usually pain in the lower back – and it severely restricts daily life. “The prognosis for many cases of acute back pain is generally good,” reassures specialist Faris Gameel from the Schmerzklinik Basel. “Nevertheless, there is a risk that the symptoms may develop into a chronic condition.”
Rapid help for back pain
Since February 2026, the Schmerzklinik Basel has been offering a specialised acute consultation service for people with newly developed or suddenly worsening back pain. This service enables a rapid medical assessment. An important part of the consultation is providing information. Patients receive clear information about their symptoms and the importance of movement in daily life. This knowledge helps to alleviate fears and enables them to resume their own activities.
Depending on the situation, the acute consultation team works closely with other specialist departments at the Schmerzklinik Basel. These include physiotherapy, neural therapy, infiltration therapy, psychology and specialist pain clinics. This ensures that patients receive exactly the support they need for the successful treatment of their pain.
